In skimming plaster, you need have a good idea of the resultant texture, which should be cream like in consistency, and free from lumps. In getting the right mix, you first need to add water into the container and then gradually add the plaster while continually mixing it to avoid the formation of lumps. A mixing paddle can be extremely helpful in getting a good mix.

Getting the plaster on the ceiling or the wall should be done quickly to keep the plaster's thickness over the surface uniform. After the plaster firms up, but hasn't yet dried, you can begin to run through its surface using a clean trowel which will help you polish the surface.
